CHURCHES, SCHOOLS & GROUPS GET INVOLVED

SUNDAY LAUNCH

Have a launch Sunday for National Others Week. Hand out the list of Kindness Actions found in the Resource Section of the NOW Website. Get people to sign up for Acts of Kindness.

MICROENTERPRISE VENTURE

Promote the purchase of pig through organizations like Compassion. This pig is then give away in a Developing Nation to a family who then use it in a microenterprise venture that can lift them out of poverty.

BLESSING TO THE COMMUNITY

The church could purchase something that would be a blessing to the community….for example a large screen TV to be placed in the Accident and Emergency Waiting Room of the local hospital.

WRITE TO LOCAL POLITICIANS

Encourage Individual church members to write to their local politicians appreciating something they have done in the last little while that has benefited the local area.

HUMBLE HERO AWARD

Use the National Others Week Humble Hero Award to honour some champions of ‘others’ in the local community….like a family (that maybe aren’t in the church) who are long term foster parents, or a hard working member of the local council, or a particularly passionate advocate for a local issue….like for example the homelessness problem in your church.

BLESS LOCAL CAFE

Open a tab at a local coffee shop for say two hours and shout the city a coffee.

HONOUR PEOPLE

Honour the people in your church that have been in the church for longer than 20 years.

FOSTER GREATER CONNECTION

Organise a night where married couples baby sit for single mums. Give the single mums a voucher to the local movies. Bonus points if you can get the different mums, to go to the movies together, thereby fostering greater connection.

CONNECT TO A CAUSE

Connect National Others Week to a cause that you feel strongly about. For example one church linked National Others Week with an Anti-Bully campaign they ran through the local school chaplaincy program.

PROVIDE FREE REFRESHMENTS

On a warm day during NOW, give out chilled cokes or chilled water to members of the public. Bonus points if you tag them National Others Week.

BRAINSTORM

Reality is that you can do anything related to kindness, others and the local community, under the umbrella of National Others Week…..So assemble some of your team and have a brainstorming session.

LIFE GROUP

Encourage each Life Group to do something for a family in the street in which they meet.

DEPARTMENTS
  • Across the entire church, ask each department to do something that is focused on others for the week.
  • For example, the ladies department could purchase 300 red roses and then go down the main street of your town and hand out the roses to other ladies tell them they wanted to bless them for National Others Week
  • Another example would be getting some of the young ladies in the youth to take small gifts up to the Children’s Ward to be kind to the children who are sick. This can also be followed up with gifts to the parents from the church, who are going through a hard time.
  • Get the Men’s Ministry to work at doing some repairs for some single mums or the elderly in the church.
  • Encourage every leader in the church to write a handwritten appreciation note to a family or individual member of the church, thanking them for being awesome.
  • One of the Departments could do something for the environment, like be involved in planting a hundred trees in an area being nurtured by local environmental groups.
  • Organize the teens ministry of the church to go and visit a retirement home.
COMMUNITY GARDEN GROUP

Approach the local Community Garden Group and assuming you have some spare area on your church property, offer them the use of some of the land for an expansion of their community garden program.

LOCAL SCHOOLS

Approach a local school and see if they would like to participate in National Others Week. Talk them through the idea that it is promoting Kindness. Possibly a joint venture could be done to bless the community between the School and the Church.

KINDNESS FOCUSED SUNDAY

Have a Sunday completely focused on others. Looking at others from an evangelistic perspective, from a community perspective that the church is called to love, or from a view of how God see’s all people. Another option would be, on the first Sunday in November, have a kindness focused Sunday.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

Connect with the Emergency Services and do something that blesses them. Shout Pizza, Take Muffins for Morning Tea, Bombard them with thank you notes.

CONTACT LOCAL MEDIA

Use the Press Release in the Resources Section of the Website to email all your local media, announcing that your church is participating in National Others Week and that you are available for interviews. Use this as an opportunity to promote, kindness, being intentionally focused on others and the focus of your church on people in the local community.

DONATE UNWANTED BOOKS

Encourage people to bring in their unwanted books and then donate them to the local library or mobile library.

SHOUTOUT TO SMALL BUSINESSES

On your church facebook page, give a shout out to local small businesses in your town that do exceptional things. Do the same to local people who go over and above.

HOST A FREE BBQ

Host a free BBQ down the main street of your town.

CHANGE PROFILE PICTURE

Encourage people in your church to change their profile for the week of NOW to the Logo for NOW.
