KINDNESS IN THE BIBLE
IN THE BIBLE
In the bible Mercy is defined as ‘kindness’; ‘favour’; ‘good deed’; ‘compassion’. It is interesting and challenging to know that the word ‘mercy’ is used nearly 300 times in the Bible, ‘Grace’ 176 times, ‘forgive’ 112 times and ‘hell’ 54 times. Clearly God has a significant focus on Mercy and Kindness. Here are some bible verses that speak about kindness.
1) Kindness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit
It is listed as one of the Christian Fruits of the Spirit by Paul in his Letter to the Galatians 5:22, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
2) Kindness is to be lived out in a Christian’s life as they reflect Christ to the world.
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
3) Kindness is a matter of choice
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long suffering;
4) Kindness connects you better with your fellow man.
What is desired in a man is kindness,
5) God is kind.
Joel 2:13 New King James Version
So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
Psalm 31:21 New King James Version
Blessed be the LORD, For He has shown me His marvellous kindness in a strong city!
6) Kindness is part of the development of the discipleship pathway in your life.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7) The bible encourages kindness to our enemies
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
8) The bible encourages kindness to complete strangers through the story of Paul’s experience.
Acts 28:1-2 28
Now when they had escaped, they then found out that the island was called Malta. And the natives showed us unusual kindness; for they kindled a fire and made us all welcome, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.
Love the term unusual kindness. Other translations use the term no little kindness. What a great way to end this section with an encouragement that we would live lives showing no little kindness….which means we live lives of lavish kindness.
This is the essence of National Others Week.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
